Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.
Stand up for your neighbor before there is no-one left to speak for you.
Stand up for your neighbor before there is no-one left to speak for you.
The takeover of Germany by the Nazi Party (officially known as the National Socialist Party) in the early 1930's did not happen over night. It was slow, gradual, and often times no-one spoke up about it. While they came for someone in the middle of the night to take someone away, neighbors would watch in silence, fearful that if they spoke up they would be next. That fear and timid nature was what allowed the National Socialists to come and take people away. It is what allowed them to run rampant over the population, and through the lens of history we can see what happened.
Fast forward to today and what do we see? Encouragement from the Government to rat out your neighbor for minor infractions. Speeches from major politicians talking about the evil of "the other side". The demonization of differing opinions. None of this is by accident, as they want to pit neighbor against neighbor. Those in power know that if we work together, that if we love our neighbor instead of hating them, that those in power have no power over us.
The only power that they have is what we allow them to have.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
